DCU and Donabate Community College Score Success at Kirkstown Motor Track
The Faculty of Engineering and Computing has supported two transition year student teams at Donabate Community College to build electric powered cars which took part in the Greenpower Car Challenge in Kirkstown Belfast on June 11th. The project was kindly sponsored by Siemens who provided Solid Edge, their Project Lifecycle Management Software to DCU to enable the students to build their vehicles.The teams had a successful day picking up a third place in the first race, overall 3rd in the formula 24 category and a prize for the use of digital information (CFD) in the design of the cars.
The project was led by Dr Brian Corcoran and Dr Paul Young from the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and fully supported by the faculty technical staff. The collaboration between the students, their teachers, DCU and the Siemens team is an invaluable way for encouraging an interest in STEM subjects and careers as students experience these subjects in a practical way in projects such as this.
Speaking just before the teams left for Belfast, Gary O’Callaghan, CEO at Siemens said “ Siemens in Ireland is delighted to support the Greenpower Challenge.
