DCU allocated €7 million to develop new indoor training facility at Morton Stadium
Dublin City University has been allocated €7 million to develop a new indoor training facility at Morton Stadium in Santry. The facility will include a full 8 lane 100-metre track, high-jump area, high performance gym, medical and physiotherapy treatment spaces, changing village, public toilets, and storage.
Dublin City University took over the running of the Morton Stadium in 2022 and have so far invested €3 million in upgrading the facilities there, including the laying of a new indoor and outdoor track, upgrades to the high performance gym and changing rooms, new drainage and cross-track electric power outlets, new fencing and stand seating, an IT system replacement and the delivery of new track and field equipment.
James Galvin, Director of DCU Sport said
“This funding represents a significant milestone in the journey which will allow DCU to fulfil its ambitious vision for Morton Stadium - The National Athletics Stadium. We look forward to further developing Morton as a modern athletics stadium with increased capacity that will serve athletes and athletics in Ireland for years to come.
I am confident that redevelopment will bring huge benefits for the athletics community in Ireland for many generations to come and I would like to express my gratitude to the government for this grant and look forward to further engagement as we move forward with our plans for this much needed facility.”
Among the recipients were Bohemian Football Club, who received funding for the redevelopment of Dalymount Park in Phibsborough. DCU signed an 18 year partnership with Bohemians in 2021. The arrangement saw the DCU Sports Campus on the Ballymun Road become Bohemians’ training base, with DCU and Bohs working together to further develop this facility.
