European Masters in Translation (EMT) Network meeting
On 21st November, DCU hosted the European Masters in Translation (EMT) Network meeting attended by 85 delegates from 27 countries and by a team from the Directorate General for Translation (DGT) at the European Commission.
The meeting was opened by DCU President Professor Brian MacCraith. Mr Rytis Martikonis, director of DGT, highlighted the opportunities for Irish language translators at the European Commission between now and the end of the derogation in 2022.
Mr Gerard Kiely, head of the European Commission's representation in Ireland, spoke about the importance of translation for communication. Dr Joss Moorkens from the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS) gave a fascinating overview of DCU research on machine translation.
The EMT network was set up by the European Commission to enhance university training of translators across Europe and members are universities that teach Masters programmes in Translation Studies. In order to join, universities have to demonstrate that their courses meet the competences established by the EMT board. There are two EMT courses at DCU - the MA in Translation Studies and the MSc in Translation Technology - and DCU is the only EMT member on the island of Ireland.
