New book charts the emergence of science communication
The area of science communication in Ireland was barely a recognisable phenomenon over two decades ago.
However, in the mid-1990s, this began to change slowly and now science communication is a well-recognised field of professional practice and voluntary effort, involving state agencies, government departments, academic societies, higher education institutions and many more.
A new publication Little Country, Big Talk; Science Communication in Ireland, edited by Dr Padraig Murphy, Dr Declan Fahy and Mr Brian Trench (School of Communications, DCU) brings together an array of perspectives in a superb collection of analytical and reflective essays.
Individuals from a wide cross-section, including higher education institutions, media, educational outreach programmes and teaching come together to chart the evolution of science communication in a book which serves as a case-study for the emergence of this field.
Dr Padraig Murphy of the CELSIUS Research Group and Chair of the MSc in Science Communication is the author of the essay “Public engagement in contested science and technology” which was published on Silicon Republic.
