Insider Perspective on Disability

Last semester DCU School of Nursing introduced an innovative learning module to allow students better understand the psychology of illness and disability. Students undertaking the Psychology, Illness and Disability module gained first-hand experience of being a wheelchair user by completing a number of activities both on and off campus.

Each student spent one full day on campus in a wheelchair, getting involved in all the activities typical to a DCU student (attending lectures, borrowing a book from DCU Library, having lunch in the Student Restaurant). They ventured further afield to complete tasks in the city centre such as buying a pair of socks in Penneys, visiting the Garden of Remembrance and using an ATM.

The students' experience featured on RTÉ Radio 1's Mooney Show and created quite a reaction. Now the students will present their experiences to the DCU community on Thursday 4th April at 7:30pm in HG18, DCU School of Nursing and Human Sciences. All are welcome.
