An Evening with Prof. Jim Gleeson ACU
Integrating a Catholic perspective across the curriculum of Catholic schools, beyond RE: Research from Queensland, Australia
The Mater Dei Centre for Catholic Education (MDCCE), DCU Institute of Education, is hosting an evening with Professor Jim Gleeson (Australian Catholic University, Brisbane) on Wed 31stJanuary at 7pm in Lecture Theatre E223, DCU St. Patrick's Campus.
Professor Gleeson is, since 2013, the inaugural Professor of Identity and Curriculum in Catholic Education at ACU. He is well known to many in Ireland for his work in Education at the University of Limerick where he was Director of the Curriculum Evaluation and Policy Research Unit. He was nominated by the Higher Education sector to the Teaching Council (2005-2012), and has contributed widely to public debates about Education.
Professor Gleeson’s recent research with 2,300 teachers in Queensland, on curriculum, culture and Catholic Education, beyond religious education as a subject, provides interesting findings relevant to Catholic schools in Ireland today. Professor Gleeson will look at how younger teachers perceive the issues compared with those who have been teaching for many years. A general tendency towards engaging with spontaneous 'teachable moments' rather than formal planning, when it comes to issues of interest to Catholic ethos, will be discussed. The accessibility of Catholic Social Teaching as a stimulus for reflection in Catholic schools will also be highlighted. For those interested in Catholic Education, the voice of teachers in Catholic schools in Australia has much to say.
Brief responses will be provided by Dr. Maire Griffin, CEO of CEIST and Aiveen Mullally, who recently presented her doctoral thesis at DCU Institute of Education, focused on inclusion with regard to religious diversity. The discussion will then be open to those in attendance who would like to contribute to the conversation.
