Postdoctoral Researcher - Full-time Fixed Term contract (12 months, from 1 June 2018)

The EPA-ADVISE Project

ADVISE—“A structureD eValuation of Ireland’S climate policy responsE”—is an 18 month project that commenced in February 2018 and is funded by the Irish Environmental Protection Agency. The project is developing an evaluation framework drawing on EU best practice as well as the latest findings of the growing literature on climate change policy evaluation. This framework will be used to evaluate Ireland’s policy response to climate change since 1996 across 5 sectors: electricity generation; built environment; transport; agriculture, forest and land use; and climate adaptation and resilience. The project will help to develop solutions by underpinning the framing of future climate change policies in Ireland.

The Role

We wish to appoint a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher for a period of 12 months to contribute to delivery of the research outputs of the project, including conducting literature reviews, undertaking primary data collection and analysis, and producing a variety of project outputs. It is envisaged that this appointment will commence on 1 June 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter.

supervising PhD students on topics in their areas of research. The School ranks in the top

150 departments in the world for Political Science in the Shanghai Rankings, the top 200

departments in the world for Politics and International Studies in the QS World University

Rankings, and in the top 300 for Law in the QS World University Rankings.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work under the leadership of the Principal Investigator on the project, Dr. Diarmuid Torney. The role will involve the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Contributing to literature reviews and development of the project research design;

  • Collecting and collating research data;

  • Analysing and interpreting of the research data;

  • Contributing to the production of project related deliverables and outputs, including
academic articles, conference papers, policy papers, and other publications;

  • Organising stakeholder meetings associated with the project;

  • Communicating and disseminating the project findings and outputs, including through
social media
  • Undertaking additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope of
 level of the post.

Mandatory requirements

  • A PhD in political science, public administration, or a related discipline. In the absence of a PhD, equivalent research experience may be considered;

  • Excellent empirical research, analytical, and writing skills;

  • Strong interpersonal and organisational skills;

  • Ability to communicate effectively to both academic and practitioner audiences.


Desirable

  • Track record of research on climate change or environmental policy;

  • Experience of conducting ex-post policy evaluation;

  • Knowledge of the Irish climate change policy landscape.


Salary


Remuneration for the role will be €37,383 per annum
