Jack Halberstam public seminar in DCU on 23rd January 2025: ‘Anarchitecture After Everything’

IRGS and EROSS were privileged to welcome Prof. Jack Halberstam to DCU in January for an insightful and inspiring lecture titled ‘Anarchitecture after Everything’. Halberstam is Professor of Gender Studies and English at Columbia University and the author of seven books including Female Masculinity (Duke UP, 1998) and Gaga Feminism: Sex, Gender, and the End of Normal (Beacon Press, 2012). The lecture drew on the work of Gordon Matta-Clark and other radical US artists of the 1970s to explore the potential of opening up space as a means to reimagining new ‘unworlds’ and forms of embodiment that resist operating as vehicles for capitalism. As Matta-Clark used ‘anarchist architecture’ to explain and defend the need for change, Halberstam argued that we must create space for alternative paradigms in order to displace both fascism and neoliberal capitalism.
