Dr Rob Mark, Honorary Researcher, HERC, recently attended the third UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in Cork ( September 2017). Two previous conferences were held in Beijing 2013 and Mexico 2015, each involving more than 700 delegates from countries worldwide.

Cork City has a vibrant, inclusive, quality infrastructure of education from basic to higher education and is home to enthusiastic, involved and committed learning communities. Each year it organises a one week long learning festival. Rob was also invited as a speaker on HERC research into third age learning as part of the city's learning festival. A learning city provides inclusive learning from basic to higher education. It includes learning in families and communities, learning for and in the workplace as well as use of  modern learning technologies. Learning cities can provide quality and excellence in learning as well as a  culture of learning throughout life.
