HERC Director co-authors OECD Report
HERC Director Professor Maria Slowey was part of an OECD team reviewing education in Indonesia. The report ‘Education in Indonesia: Rising to the Challenge’ was formally launched with a presentation in Jakarta on March 25th and is available here.
As one of the major economies of Southeast Asia, Indonesia has set itself ambitious goals for social and economic development. The report outlines how Indonesia’s ability to compete in the global economy, benefit from ASEAN free trade and make the transition to high-income status will depend largely on its success in nurturing the talents of its young population. With 43% of the population under the age of 25, Indonesia has a unique window of opportunity to propel growth by equipping young people with the right skills. Highlighting achievements and challenges for the Indonesian educational sector, the report makes a number of specific recommendations in areas of quality enhancement, participation, efficiency and in relation to the development of an Indonesian Qualifications Framework.
In May 2015, an Indonesian delegation will conduct a study visit to Ireland and England. The Irish component of this visit will be overseen by HERC and include consultations with Irish higher education bodies and institutions.
