Bert Gordijn presents at the regional conference “Sustainable Development Goals and the Role of Ethics in Southern Africa" (Gaborone, Botswana)
The conference, titled “SDGs and the role of ethics in Southern Africa: Promoting bioethics, ethics education and research” was held on October 17-18 in Gaborone, Botswana. 12 countries participated and provided their expertise on the themes: i) setting the scene of bioethical issues in Africa, and ii) identifying and improving bioethics infrastructures in the region. The main result of the conferenced was the development of an outcome document/road map for the development of bioethics in SADC countries. UNESCO’s Regional Office for Southern Africa and its regional counterpart in East Africa are supporting an inter-regional initiative in collaboration with the Botswana Ministry of Tertiary Education, Research, Science, and Technology, the Southern Africa Development Community, and the University of Botswana. The aim of this initiative is to review the status of bioethics in SADC countries, prepare a solid foundation targeting bioethics engagement in Africa, and establish coordination and collaboration at the regional level with participation of the Southern Africa Development Community.
