The School of Education Studies and EQI – the Centre for Evaluation, Quality and Inspection – hosted the Inaugural Lecture of Professor Stafford Hood, recently appointed Adjunct Professor at the School on March 3rd, 2015. In a wide ranging lecture, Stafford Hood, one of the leading evaluation theorists of today, offered the large audience an overview of the development of the theory and practice of Culturally Responsive Evaluation and Assessment over the past 30 years. Entitled ‘The Relevance of Culture in Evaluation and Assessment: A Personal Journey’, gave a fascinating insight into the role that culture plays in the design, implementation and interpretation of education and educational quality. In a lively question and answer session Professor Hood highlighted the centrality of teachers to the development of cultural awareness in education and challenged the Irish education system to examine the demographic makeup our teaching cohort.
Stafford Hood is the Sheila M. Miller Professor of Education, Associate Dean for Research and Research Education, and Founding Director of the newly established Center for Culturally Responsive Evaluation and Assessment in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
