Product Design, Development & Value Analysis

This module offers a broad introduction to product design while also familiarising a student with engineering economics (value analysis) in a manner that can support the transition from a technical engineering role to a management role. Students will be introduced to a range of topics such as product development methodologies, product life cycle management, quality assurance, quality function deployment, statistics, marketing, and decision-making such that they can engage knowledgeably with (or manage teams of) subject matter experts. Furthermore, the students will be provided in-depth knowledge of engineering economics and address aspects such as time value of money, present worth analysis, rate of return, equipment depreciation, and replacement analysis.

Upon successful completion of this micro-credential students will be able to:

•  Analyse the key elements in the design process.
• Generate alternative design solutions to meet design requirements.
• Perform a Faults Mode and Effects Analysis.
• Perform a Quality Function Deployment analysis and describe quality and regulatory requirements.
• Perform a risk analysis for a product.
• Be able to use Decision Theory to evaluate design and project options.
• Implement the methodology of cost evaluation and value analysis.
• Analyse the role of rapid prototyping in new product development.

A Primary Honours degree, Level 8 in Electronic/Electrical/Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Sciences or other Cognate/Engineering Disciplines. Applications are also invited from diverse educational and/or employment backgrounds, with applications evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

• All applicants must submit a copy of their passport

There is no availability for a deferred entry onto a micro-credential.
