MBA Graduate, Colin Moran, awarded Chancellors Medal

At the graduation ceremony for DCU Business School on Tuesday last, Colin Moran who graduated with a first class honours MBA, was awarded the Chancellors Medal.  This medal is awarded only where there is an outstanding candidate who has achieved excellence in both the academic and extra-curricular domains and Colin met all of this criteria.  As well as achieving academic excellence Colin is most widely known for his sporting success as an elite GAA athlete. He played for the Dublin Senior GAA football team from 1998 until 2009, when he was forced to retire at 28 years of age because of a recurrent injury. During his football career, he captained the Dublin senior team in 2006 and 2007, and won many major honours, including five Leinster Championships (two as Captain), two Railway Cup interprovincial titles, and the O’Byrne Cup. As a minor, he won a Dublin Championship with Ballyboden-St Enda’s. Colin, right across the spectrum of his activities, in his academic studies, sporting endeavours, media activities and his business career with Bank of Ireland, Colin never gives less than 100%, and strives for excellence in everything he does.

Beyond his own personal accomplishments, Colin also stands out for his willingness and commitment to “giving back” in every aspect of his life, valuing all of the opportunities that he has been given, and wanting to share his good fortune with others.

Colin joined the DCU MBA programme in 2010 as one of the first recipients of the prestigious MBA scholarship, sponsored by DCU Business School in partnership with the Gaelic Players Association.  He is held in such high esteem by the MBA programme team that he was the obvious choice to become the programme’s first-ever MBA Ambassador, a new initiative for the School. He willingly took on this voluntary role in May of this year for a 2-3 year period.  As well as working alongside the Programme Team to promote the MBA programme and meet potential candidates, he is involved in mentoring MBA students and has also mentored students while a student himself.  He is actively involved in raising money for charity and in the past has climbed Machu Picchu to raise money for CARI.  He works alongside his MBA colleagues to raise money each year for their chosen charity.  This year, the charity is Scoil Chiarain Special Needs Youth Club in Glasnevin.  He is treasurer of the DCU MBA Society, Ambassador for the Asthma Society of Ireland and Director of Juvenile Football for Dublin.

Colin is a manager in Corporate Banking with Bank of Ireland.

The Dean, in reading Colin’s citation during the graduation ceremony said “Colin is a great role model for all of our students, pre- and post-experienced, and is a graduate that all of us in the DCU community can be justly proud of”
