Tell us why you chose this undergraduate degree
I have an interest in international politics and rarely shy away from debates. Studying an International Relations BA offered me the opportunity to do what I enjoy in an academic realm. International Relations at DCU is taught by very respectable academics, which influenced my decision to apply to the university. I also wanted to pick up research techniques, learn how to structure an argument and improve my critical thinking.
What are your career plans or hopes?
Given that I was raised in the Middle East and have an Egyptian parent, I want to become a diplomat for Ireland in an Arab state. Alternatively, a political analyst is enticing. I am currently on an internship placement and gaining relevant experience in the political analysis field.
Have you any advice for incoming students?
Do not be scared to have your own opinions or to acknowledge the strength of an argument that you might not agree with. Be mindful that your world view is not universal. There are students in DCU from numerous socio-economic, cultural and religious backgrounds; I strongly encourage you to respectfully seek to understand their perspectives.
