John O'Flynn
I am John O’Flynn and I teach on DCU’s MA in Music, Sound, Culture and Media. My main areas are music and sound studies, particularly in film, TV and other screen media, and how such productions relate to broader society and cultures across the globe.
My current research project examines ways that music and sound featured in historical representations of empires on film, and what this tells us about cultural-political dominance and resistance, as well as contributing to debates about decolonisation.
As a practising musician, I’m also involved in promoting students’ creativity and artistic leadership, individually as well as in groups.
I am part of a much wider team teaching on the MA in Music, Sound, Culture and Media. My colleagues have different academic backgrounds and industry experience to mine. At the same time, we frequently collaborate on interdisciplinary projects that reflect our shared interests.
This is something we are all passionate about, and we want the same experience for you – to maximise your interests, capacity and collaborative skills for engaging with sonic arts and cultures in an increasingly intermedial world.
