Caitríona McAteer
I chose the MSc sa Bhainistíocht agus Gnó Digiteach as my background is in the Arts and Education and I wanted to broaden my experience and qualifications in order to have a wider range of choices in the employment sector. The course is unique since it is presented through the medium of Irish and this aligned with my love for Gaeilge and my ability in the language.
I found all the modules to be valuable and empowering; Leadership, Marketing and Project Management in particular. These were all areas in which I was interested and the course afforded me the opportunity to engage with the areas in detail.
I was able to use my learning, research and assignment work in the context of my full-time job. I also valued the opportunity to work with my class peers and connect and collaborate with external companies, all from a range of different backgrounds within and outside of the Irish-medium sector.
Among the highlights was the opportunity to interview people in a wide range of sectors, the insights which that provided and how they linked to the theoretical content of the course.
I also learnt a lot about the dynamics involved in teamwork, during class discussions and exercises and group assignments including entering the Smarter Travel Student Awards.
I made strong friendships with my class peers, developed great working relationships with all my lecturers and worthwhile connections with people in the Irish language sector, media sector and beyond.
When I embarked on this course, I hoped that it would boost my employability skills. A few months into the course, I applied for a Communications and PR job with TG4. Coming from a teaching background, I was concerned initially that my skills and experience may have been too narrow to allow me to avail of this exciting opportunity.
However, in preparing my application and during the interview, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I could draw on my experiences on the course. The Interview Panel were impressed with the breadth of content and experience involved in the course and I was delighted to accept a job offer.
I have really enjoyed applying my learning and research throughout the rest of the course to my work in TG4 and have been able to contribute and provide valuable statistics, reflections and ideas to my own department (Communications) and others within the company as a result.
