‘The past shows we can deliver when we work together,’ Mairead McGuinness tells DCU’s PROSPER conference
This week, DCU welcomed academic institutions from 12 different EU member states for the kick-off conference of the Jean Monnet Network PROSPER project, co-ordinated by Dublin City University’s Brexit Institute and the DCU Dublin European Law Institute (DELI). PROSPER is an EU-funded project that will focus on exploring and enhancing economic resilience within the EU by identifying and promoting strategies that can strengthen economic stability and growth, particularly in the face of challenges such as globalization, climate change, and economic disparities among Member States.
Mairead McGuinness, the outgoing European Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union, delivered the keynote address at the conference:
European security and defence are high on the agenda as is protecting our democracy and values, protecting our environment and natural resources and our way of life. These ambitious targets can only be achieved if the EU is willing to change. It requires national leaders to provide the strong leadership necessary to strengthen the single market and once and for all complete Banking Union and Capital Markets Union to unlock finance for much needed investments. The past shows we can deliver when we work together - but we can deliver much more by working better together and strengthening our global impact by our actions, and not just our words.
Speaking before the conference, Professor Federico Fabbrini, founding Director of the Brexit Institute and the Dublin European Law Institute, said:
The conference kicks off the Jean Monnet Network PROSPER, a pan-European consortium of 12 universities, which is led by DCU. PROSPER is the only Jean Monnet Network funded by the EU in 2024, which confirms the international leadership played by the DCU Brexit Institute / Dublin European Law Institute on EU research and policy.
