Brexit Institute event marks approaching two-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

The event was held on DCU’s St. Patrick’s Campus in Drumcondra on Thursday 25 January.

Federica Mogherini, Former High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, gave the keynote address in the Seamus Heaney Theatre. Now Rector of the College of Europe, Ms. Mogherini also held a meeting in Belvedere House with members of The Brexit Institute.

Dublin City University established the Brexit Institute with the aim to explore how Brexit impacts on government, business and society at large. The DCU Brexit Institute operates as a hub and a magnet for the analysis of Brexit, both from an academic and a policy perspective. Through the organisation of regular events the Brexit Institute provides a leading platform to document and debate developments in the relations between the UK and the EU.

Following Ms. Mogherini’s keynote address, a panel discussion was held with Prof. Federico Fabrini, Director of the Brexit Institute, Dr. Tatyena Lokot, Associate Professor in Digital Media & Society at the DCU School of Communications and Dr. Kenneth McDonagh, Head of School at the School of Law and Government in DCU.

Prof Federico Fabbrini said;

"As the flagship centre at DCU on European affairs, the Brexit Institute is proud to host a high-level event marking two years since the start of the war in Ukraine. The Russian illegal invasion of Ukraine constitutes a turning point in the history of Europe, and in the past two years the Brexit Institute has monitored and analysed closely the implications of this conflict for EU integration and enlargement. The hosting today of a keynote speech by Federica Mogherini, who was the chief of EU foreign and security policy for half a decade, is a testament of our role and commitment in this space."

Prof Dáire Keogh speaking at the DCU Brexit Institute Event

President of DCU Prof. Dáire Keogh said;

“I am delighted to welcome Federica Mogherini to DCU, as we review the European political landscape, almost two years after Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. Given her experience at the highest levels of European diplomacy, no one is better qualified to provide a clear-headed analysis of the implications of this brutal war for European integration and Security Policy.”
