Taoiseach Micheál Martin to launch a new book offering a fresh perspective on the Kennedy legacy and politics in Ireland and the United States
From Whence I Came: The Kennedy Legacy, Ireland and America, a new book edited by Dublin City University Professor, Donnacha Ó Beacháin, and Kennedy Summer School Director, Brian Murphy, will be launched by Taoiseach Mícheál Martin on Monday 15th March.
The timely collection of essays offers a fresh perspective on the Kennedy legacy and the politics of Ireland and the US. It features specially commissioned pieces by a range of respected academic and political figures, including former Obama speechwriter, Cody Kennan, the President of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organisation, Kerry Kennedy, and former senior adviser to Bernie Sanders, Tad Devine.
It will be launched by Taoiseach Micheál Martin as part of the virtual 2021 St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, organised by the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, Consulate General of Ireland in Boston, and Embassy of Ireland, USA.
The event will feature a candid conversation on the current state of Irish-American affairs with Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Dr Robert Mauro, Executive Director of the Irish Institute at Boston College. A panel discussion on the Kennedy legacy and Ireland will follow with:
- The Honorable Richard Neal, Chairman, House Ways and Means Committee
- The Honorable Joe Kennedy III, former Massachusetts Congressman
- Dr Alison Meagher, Deputy Consul General of Ireland in Shanghai
- Samantha Power, USAID Administrator Nominee, former US Ambassador to the United Nations and Professor of Practice, Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Law School
Speaking about the launch, Donnacha Ó Beacháin said “Brian and I are very proud of this groundbreaking work which contains specially commissioned pieces from a remarkably diverse range of respected figures. Collectively, the authors provide fresh and nuanced perspectives, surveying the past, critiquing the present and offering roadmaps to the future.
With the presidency of Joe Biden seeing a renewed focus on broader themes within Irish, American and global politics, From Whence I Came is a fascinating and timely collection that offers a fresh perspective on the Kennedy legacy and the politics of Ireland and the United States.”
