New DCU research to look at data protection challenges generated by Brexit

A new project led by Dublin City University will examine the data protection issues and challenges generated by Brexit.

Cross Border Data Protection Network (CROSS-DPN) brings together researchers, practitioners, businesses and civil society from Ireland and the UK to look at the future of data protection in the post-Brexit era. The project has been awarded funding from the Irish Research Council and the UK Economic and Research Council.

The team will be coordinated by Dr Edoardo Celeste from DCU and Dr Napolean Xanthoulis, University of Portsmouth, and includes Dr Roisin Costello, DCU School of Law & Government and Dr Edina Harbinja, Aston University, as co-investigators.

Speaking about the project, Dr Celeste, said:

"CROSS-DPN represents a first step to mitigate the adverse effects that Brexit is generating from a data protection perspective. It brings together stakeholders from Ireland, UK and Europe to discuss common solutions and foster transnational cooperation.

We look forward to partnering with leading research institutions from Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK, and to engaging with industry, government and civil society on the future of data protection in our countries."

The project will organise four multi-stakeholder conferences throughout 2021, virtually hosted by DCU, the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies of London, Queen’s University Belfast and the King’s College London Centre of European Law.

The Network will be launched by the EU Advocate General Szpunar on 3rd February 2021 from 15.30-17. Click here to register
