Fiontar agus Scoil na Gaeilge to host Irish literature symposium
Fiontar agus Scoil na Gaeilge at DCU is hosting a unique one-day symposium on Irish diary writing which is the first event of its kind ever held in the Irish language.
Taking place on 29 April from 9:00am to 5.30pm, this full-day event will feature talks from established scholars in the genre as well as early career researchers.
Organiser Dr Pádraig Ó Liatháin at DCU’s Fiontar agus Scoil na Gaeilge said: “Diary writing is an important means of authorial self-discovery and self-expression. Since the time of the Flight of the Earls in the seventeenth century, it has been utilised in the Irish language for various purposes. By its nature a diary can be both intensely private, yet global in its outlook.”
According to Dr Ó Liatháin, diary writing in Irish has also provided a record of:
- matters of court and diplomatic intrigue
- Irish and international political affairs
- historical milestones
- observations on nature
- life on Irish-speaking coastal islands
- the collection of music and folklore traditions
- travel writing
- medical narratives
The event is open to the public as well as academics, and offers a great opportunity to network and learn more about the genre of diary-writing in Irish.

De réir a cáilíochta is féidir le dialann a bheith an-phearsanta agus príobháideach, ach fairsing agus domhanda ina dearcadh."
