SFI has launched the Frontiers for the Future Programme (FFP) 2021 call. The programme provides opportunities for independent investigators to conduct highly innovative, collaborative research with the potential to deliver impact, whilst also providing discrete opportunities for high-risk, high-reward research projects.
The programme is divided into Project and Award streams:
- Projects will run as a fixed deadline call, with a submission deadline on 28th January 2022 (budget: 200-480K (direct costs); duration: 24, 36, 48 months).
- Awards will run as a rolling call and applicants can submit applications from 28th January 2022 (budget: 500K-1Mln; duration: 48 or 60 months).
DCU Research Support and Research Development teams have put in place a wide range of supports for potential applicants, including information sessions and workshops, review of draft proposals by the Research Development Officers and internal peer review, and access to the DCU Grant Repository.
The SFI Call Manager in Research Support (ecaterina.mcdonagh@dcu.ie) is available to offer advice and clarification on the call T&Cs, budget, SESAME setups & troubleshooting and any specific queries that may arise (including liaising with the SFI Programme Manager).

The Irish Cancer Society (ICS) will soon launch its new flagship research programme, the Collaborative Cancer Survivorship Research Centre.
This is envisaged to be a multi-million euro investment to serve as a catalyst to establishing a world-class, multi-institutional, and multi-disciplinary national cancer research collaboration for up to five years that is scientifically and practically impactful for people affected by cancer in Ireland.
In advance of this launch, the ICS are holding a pre-application briefing session on Monday 29th November (15:00 – 16:00) to outline the application requirements and procedure, and to answer questions. Applications for this award are expected to open in December 2021 for a project of up to 5 years duration commencing in Q4 2022.
Attendees will be provided with a draft version of the application guidelines in advance of the meeting.
This event is open to those who might be able to lead or contribute to an ambitious project, such as:
· Senior experts in cancer survivorship research and practice (e.g. social sciences, nursing, allied health, primary care, oncology clinicians, etc) based in Irish higher education institutions or public hospitals. This may include any aspect or age group of cancer care, including adults, paediatrics, geriatrics, palliative care. etc.
· Cancer researchers with experience in leading/managing inter-institutional cancer research initiatives. This might include translational research in cases where such research may complement/add value the primary survivorship focus.
· Representatives from Higher Education Institutions (e.g. Research Offices) or public hospitals (or hospital groups) who want to support those undertaking an application
· People affected by cancer who are actively working to effect improvements in cancer survivorship, and key stakeholders of national health policy and cancer treatment.

The EU4Health 2021 Work programme has been released, with details of Action Grants and Prizes.
Action Grants:
The second wave of funding calls for action grants has been launched, worth up to €44million. Projects in areas such as health data, healthy lifestyles, mental health, cancer and genomics will be supported under these calls. Of note, there is a particular focus on cancer to support and implement Europe’s Beating Cancer plan. The deadline for these calls is the 25th January 2022. Prizes:
The 2021 EU Health Award has also been launched and it covers two topics:
- Cancer prevention: rewarding initiatives of cities, NGOs or other civil society organisations, and educational institutions seeking to promote communication and health literacy on cancer prevention among children and young people (from 6 to 24 years old).
- Mental health: rewarding community-based initiatives alleviating the mental health impact of COVID-19.

The next wave of tenders is due to be launched in November/Dec 2021. These include the following three tenders:
- HERA/Global surveillance of cross-border health threats (€5M)
- Flexible EU manufacturing design (€3M)
- Flexible EU manufacturing: reservation & access to capacities (€37M)

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine in conjunction with Enterprise Ireland invites eligible applicants to submit research proposals under Horizon Europe, the EU Research and Innovation Framework Programme.
The programme includes a thematic area Cluster 6 which offers funding to Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment. This cluster has a budget of over €2.2 billion for the period 2021-2022 with an overall budget of €10 billion for the period 2022-2027.
There are a variety of one stage and two stage project proposals in the 2021-22 work programme, outlined on the Horizon Europe portal under the Food, Bioeconomy Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment Programme.
- The deadline for the submission of one stage projects is 15th February 2022 (17:00 CEST) with projects expected to commence in Circa November 2022.
- The submission of the first stage of two stage projects is 15th February 2022 (17:00 CEST) with the deadline for the submission of the second stage of two stage projects is 1st September 2022 (17:00 CEST) with projects expected to commence in Circa May 2023.
The aim of the research programme is to accelerate the transition towards the sustainable management of natural resources. It also aims to facilitate collaboration and strengthens the impact of research and innovation in developing, supporting and implementing EU and national policies while tackling global challenges. The research funding includes measures for: climate neutrality of primary production, circular management of resources, sustainable and healthy food systems, halt of biodiversity decline, and prevention and removal of pollution.

Geological Survey Ireland has launched a new call to purchase small scale equipment or to upgrade existing research equipment. Applicants can request between €5,000 and €25,000 for equipment relevant to geoscience and Earth science research on the island of Ireland.
The need for the equipment must be justified and it should aim to support collaboration across the geoscience research community. For more information, terms and conditions and the application form, please go to the GSI website, Open Call page.

The Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF) is a €500 million fund established under Project Ireland 2040. It is managed by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment and administered by Enterprise Ireland.
The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar, together with the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, launched the fourth Call for applications to the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF) on 8th November 2021.

The call for proposals for the EI Commercialisation Fund Award is now open.
Enterprise Ireland’s full Commercialisation Fund award grant provides third-level researchers with the support required to transform commercially-relevant research into investable high potential start-ups. Significant funding will allow researchers to develop, build and validate their technology, both technically and commercially, using a tailored development plan.
The deadline for submission of applications is 3pm on Friday 11th February, 2022.

As a partner in the ECIU University, DCU is delighted to relaunch the Research Mobility Fund (RMF), which offers grants of up to €5,000 to support research exchanges and visits within the ECIU network. Participants may apply for travel and associated costs to visit ECIU member institutions for activities that include the development and strengthening of collaborations, participation in specific training activities, accessing research infrastructures and sharing of best practices.
The RMF is an internal rolling call open to all DCU researchers, PhD students and research support staff. Participants from all disciplines are welcome to apply, with preference given to applications focused on activities relating to UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable cities and communities), in line with the ECIU long-term research strategy.
