  Identifying Your Skills and Experience & DCU Graduate Attributes

1. Be Strategic and take responsibility for your own career development.
2. Develop DCU Graduate attributes as outlined in the recently launched Generation 21 Initiative for all round success. www.dcu.ie/graduate_attributes/brochure_web.pdf
3. Realise your own skills and potential. Have short and medium-term career strategies. Ask yourself, “What are my strong points?”Can I improve in certain areas? “Can I provide evidence of the Attributes outlined in Generation 21?” “What do I really want to do?” and “Where do I see myself in the next few years?”
4. Identify and Measure what is expected from the job descriptions. Connect the dots from your degree, project work and professional and extracurricular activities with jobs available.
5. What can you do to maximise your contributions? Can you give specific examples of the skills you have acquired e.g. creative and enterprising skills, effective communication, globally engagement, lifelong learning, solutions oriented and leadership examples.

7. Be Realistic – communicate your message effectively in your job applications and interviews to convince your future employer that you are the most suitable person for the job. Remember to pay attention to grammar, punctuation and spelling. Employers are very conscious of this when reviewing CVs/Applications.
8. Put a Timeframe on your plan.
9. Remember to network. Get involved in groups such as professional associations and charitable organisations.Let your network know you are looking for work. Start with joining www.LinkedIn.com and don’t forget to talk to people. You might be surprised who will be willing to help you.

10. Step into leadership roles, and make your expertise known.

Calling all graduates with disabilities & specific learning difficulties!
This free event run by Get AHEAD aims to help graduates with disabilities polish their job seeking skills and give them some important tips on successfully adjusting to the world of work and building a fulfilling career.
High profile employers, such as Google, Citi, ESB, Sigmar Recruitment, Bord Gais, Abbott Ireland, Covidien and others will speak to graduates one on one about their expectations as employers and will field questions relating to their organisations and sectors.
Mock interviews (pre-booking essential) will be carried out by some of most successful companies based in Ireland and graduates will get feedback on how to improve their performance and CVs.
Practical seminars will take place advising graduates on topics such as stress management and considering self-employment.

John Martin graduated from Dublin City University in 1986 with an honours degree in
Electronic Engineering. He founded "The Cavan Group", a Boston-based professional
services firm specializing in information technology systems design, consulting and
project management in 1994 and holds the position of President in the Company.
He has always been passionate about finding ways for technology to facilitate
business growth, scalability, and efficiency. Driven by this passion, and his
commitment to excellence, he has built Cavan into a powerhouse of expertise in all
areas of IT Consulting, Data Centre Services, and Project Management.

In his day-to-day role in the Company, he is responsible for identifying business
and technology trends, setting the strategic direction of the company, and
developing service offerings that meet the needs of a diverse client base. He is
currently focused on Cloud Technology and the transformational impact that it will
have on academic and enterprise IT environments.

Prior to The Cavan Group, Mr. Martin held technology leadership positions in several
respected corporations including Houghton Mifflin Publishing, Racal DataComm, and
Fidelity Investments.

This presentation has been scheduled when most of the 3rd year and 4th year
students on EE programmes are available, so please make the most of this
