What are Values? - Destinations® clarifies

Values play a central role in achieving satisfaction from a job or a career. Understanding the nature and function of values can help you make rewarding career and lifestyle choices now and in the future.
Why are Values Important?
Careers advisers, life coaches and researchers increasingly recognise that values help to motivate you in your work and to give you a feeling of satisfaction. As a result, they now focus on these as much as on interests and intellectual abilities. In a career context, values might include job security, a regular income and a fixed pattern of work, or variety, risk, flexibility and independence.
Identify Your Values
We all make value decisions. Sometimes we have to choose between two or more values which are very important to us. A job involving international travel might be a high priority, but it might conflict with a strong desire to be fully involved with family life. To reconcile the situation, we reassess and reprioritise our values as different situations arise. What are your most important values at present?
Take Value Card Sort Exercise on Destinations®
This exercise will start you thinking about your work related values and their relative importance. It will also help you see where your values are compatible and where they conflict with each other. There are many different ways of describing and categorising values. This exercise divides them into:
Corporate Values - the wider values of the company or organisation you work for
Lifestyle Values - how important other aspects of your life are in relation to work
Prestige Values - how important status, money and success are to you
Values at Work - values in your day to day work environment
Communicating Your Values
The language you use to communicate your values to potential employers needs to be unambiguous and precise. By defining exactly what you mean by such phrases as 'I want a good lifestyle' you will also become clearer in your own mind and better able to relate your values to career choices. For example, does a good lifestyle mean earning a high salary and having exciting holidays, or living a simpler life in the country away from the busy city?

All the best from Fionnuala & the Careers Service Team.

DIAGEO - Graduate Programme for Sales & Marketing |
 |
Our programme
The Europe Graduate Programme for Sales & Marketing is a unique development programme that is both broad and challenging in its nature. Graduates will be expected to complete rotations in both Sales and Marketing roles during the programme, which is deemed as essential for the growth of our future leaders of the business. This is a high visibility programme, seen as a key priority for Diageo Europe by our senior leaders. To be successful on this programme in Diageo we are looking for people who have a genuine interest in both Sales & Marketing as a career, who are open minded and adaptable to the possibilities, opportunities and challenges this presents.
Structure
Our real job philosophy provides you with authentic, challenging real-world experiences designed to accelerate your career development. Expect to complete two to three rotations, with at least one of these in Sales and one in Marketing. Each rotation will last from 12 to 18 months. Dependant on personal development needs and business commitments, there may be opportunities to complete a rotation in another European location. Where this occurs, each graduate will continue to be owned by their home market & would most likely to return to that market upon completion of their assignment.
Your first rotation will normally be in your home function - either Sales or Marketing. This will be ideally based on your preference but also your performance at assessment centre, where you skills and abilities will be tested against the Diageo capabilities (ie. behaviours). However, we are looking for people who are ready to continue their career in either function, depending on business needs at the time they complete the programme.
All the details can be found our website where applications must be made: click here www.diageo-careers.com
We also encourage prospective applicants to sign up to our Facebook group where they can engage directly with our existing graduates.

 |
The Washington Ireland Program for Service and Leadership (WIP) applications for
the Class of 2010 are now open.
(WIP) is preparing the next generation of leaders for Ireland and Northern Ireland. It does this by bringing together promising students for a unique team development experience and by placing them in Washington¿s most prestigious internships.
In Washington, participants gain exposure to the world¿s oldest democracy and are immersed in American culture. Through an intense eight-week schedule, WIP interns are trained to work together as a team and are challenged to develop their own vision for the future of a post-conflict Ireland.
Students are placed in offices representing government, business, non-profit and media organisations. At the end of the summer, participants return home with enhanced professional and interpersonal skills as well as a new confidence in their own leadership abilities.
More than 400 young adults have graduated from WIP with many now emerging in important careers in politics, law, business, media and education. As they move into critical leadership roles, they retain their connection with WIP and continue to give back to their local communities through an active alumni network.
