From Scrolls to Scrolling:

Sacred Texts, Materiality, and Changing Media Cultures

This project has been funded by the Irish Research Council, and we are grateful for the support which the council has given us.

In collaboration with the University of Heidelberg’s Material Text Cultures Research Centre, the DCU School of Theology, Philosophy, and Music is hosting a one-day symposium exploring the materiality of sacred texts. Presentations will investigate the social and cultural implications of the use of Scriptures in diverse media from antiquity to the present day, from scrolls to digital formats.

Presentations will include:

  • Dr Friederike Schücking-Jungblut and Anna Krauss (Heidelberg): “The Development of Stichographic Layout in the Psalms Manuscripts of the Judean Desert”
  • Ilana Tahan, OBE (British Library): “The British Library’s Hebrew Manuscripts Digitisation Project”
  • Dr Elizabeth Boyle (Maynooth): "The Materiality of the Psalms in Early Medieval Ireland”
  • Dr Garrick Allen (DCU): “The Number of the Beast and the Value of Digital Editions”
  • Dr Jonathan Kearney (DCU): “New Media for Old: The Transformation and Diffusion of Textual Authority in Contemporary Islam”
  • Dr Brad Anderson (DCU): “Sacred Texts in a Digital Age: Exploring a Changing Landscape”
