Academic biography

Thérèse teaches and coordinates a range of pre-service and in-service mathematics education courses in her role as Senior Lecturer in the School of STEM Education, Innovation and Global Studies.  She is also involved in the supervision of masters and doctoral theses. She completed her PhD in the University of Cambridge in 2010, with a dissertation entitled 'The construction of mathematical insight by pupils in whole-class conversation’. She was one of the lead authors of the NCCA desktop review of research on mathematics education at early-childhood and primary levels. Thérèse is involved in organization of the biennial conference on research in Mathematics Education in Ireland (MEI) and regularly contributes to and edits its proceedings. She is the UK/Ireland representative on the board of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (ERME) and she chaired its tenth conference (CERME 10) which was held in Dublin in February 2017. She has a particular interest in communities of practice, and has facilitated and researched groups working together on the shared goal of improving mathematics teaching and learning - working, for example, with faculty members of the University of Pristina, Kosovo to support their development of CPD for teachers, with a group of primary and post-primary teachers to explore mathematics teaching and learning across transitions, and with teachers and teacher educators to develop their mathematical knowledge for teaching. Her current focus of research is the development of rich mathematical tasks for use in primary and post- primary settings.
