Success for DCU in intervarsity debating contest

Two DCU students have won the overall prize at the University Debating Contest 2017, recently hosted by the French Embassy in Ireland.

Facing off 7 teams from TCD, Maynooth, DIT and UCD, Ciara Fegan (BA Joint Hons - Law & French) and Barra O’Scannlain (BA Joint Hons - Gaeilge & French) impressed the team of judges with their well-reasoned arguments on digital technology and freedom of speech.

This year’s theme took the form of three separate rounds:

  • Le clic est une forme d’expression (Clicking is a way of expression)

  • Une publication Facebook engage autant que les actes (by publishing on Facebook, it is considered as strong commitment as actually participating)

  • Toute l’information doit être diffuser (all information must be known/shared)

The University Debating Contest in French, organised as part of Month of la Francophonie,  allows Irish students to practice their French while they develop their skills on how to build arguments and speak in front of an audience.
