Success for DCU student at U20 World Athletics Competition

A DCU student has broken the national record for the hammer throw during the IAAF U20 World Championships in Poland.

Adam King achieved the record on 20 July with a distance of 71.60m. The nineteen-year-old's impressive throw placed him 11th in the world.

Adam is in first year studying Athletic Training and Therapy.

Speaking to Athletics Ireland after the competition Adam said he was happy with his performance but admitted he was very nervous.

"Going into my second throw, my legs felt like jelly. But I pulled it together and a 10cm PB (personal best) and a PB in the qualifying round aswell. It's hard to argue - the World Junior Championships with two PBs".

"Definitely going forward this has given me a lot of confidence in other competitions. It's great experience," he said.

Next year Adam will be participating in the U23 Mens for the first time.

Another DCU student, Pierre Murchan, was also competing in the Championships. He took part in the 5000m on 23 July and placed 22nd with a time of 14.38.67. The first year student is studying Common Entry into Science.

The next IAAF U20 World Championships in Athletics will take place in 2018 in Finland.
