Dublin City University Incorporation leads to significant growth in Education and Arts

Dublin City University Incorporation Programme* has resulted in a significant growth in Education and Arts following today’s (Monday, August 22nd) first round CAO offers. Almost 650 offers have been made to prospective students for undergraduate programmes in education at the newly established DCU Institute of Education, the country’s first ever university Faculty of Education and largest centre for undergraduate teacher education in the country.

The university has also increased places in its significantly expanded Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences by more than 8%. This includes almost 100 additional offers to prospective students for the distinctive options within the BA Joint Honours degree.

Demand has continued to increase for degree programmes at DCU Business School, recently accredited by the AACSB as one of the top 5% of business schools globally. The most significant features here were increases in points for Global Business degrees including Global Business (Spain) up by 15 points to 515; Global Business (USA) up by 10 points to 590 and Global Business (Germany) up by 5 points to 470 .

As part of the university’s commitment to promoting careers in STEM and providing broader entry routes for students there has been an increase in demand for places in Common Entry Science and Common Entry Engineering.

The overall demand for places at Ireland’s fastest growing university is reflected in a diverse range of high entry points degree programmes including Global Business (USA) (590); Global Business (Canada) (545); Actuarial Mathematics (515); Athletic Therapy and Training (510); Physical Education with Biology (500) and Psychology (505).

Key changes for 2016 include:

Early Childhood Education, now in its second year at DCU Institute of Education has risen by 20 points to 400.

Post-Primary Education RE and English has risen by 20 points to 400.

Communications Studies have increased by 25 points to 445.

Contemporary Culture and Society has increased by 15 points to 345.

Business programmes which include opportunities for students to study abroad in partner universities have increased in popularity with Global Business (Spanish) increasing by 15 points; Global Business (USA) up 10 points and Accounting and Finance also increasing by 10 points. •

DCU’s distinctive Law Degree, Law and Society, has risen by 15 points to 450.

General Nursing has risen by 20 points to 450 as result of a 10% overall increase in applications to nursing programmes in 2016.

President of Dublin City University, Prof. Brian MacCraith said: “I am delighted to see the continued growth in popularity for DCU programmes and the university is pleased to make over 3,400 places available to prospective students today with the first round CAO offers. We are pleased to offer additional places to students across a range of undergraduate courses, particularly in Education and Arts, and that our new Institute of Education, is now the largest centre for teacher education in the country.

Our ongoing commitment to STEM career choices is evident by the increase in demand for a number of our Science and Engineering programmes while the demand for places at our internationally accredited Business School continues.”

*September 2016 sees the Incorporation of St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, Mater Dei Institute of Education and the Church of Ireland College of Education with DCU. This process has created the country’s first university Faculty of Education and radically transformed DCU’s strength in the Arts at an enlarged Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
