SALIS hosts first Pocket Cinema Festival

SALIS was delighted to host Ireland's first Pocket Cinema Festival on Wednesday April 25th in the Helix with the help of funding from QuID.

Since February 2012, a team of lecturers in SALIS has trained undergraduate language students to collectively make short films using their smartphones across several modules in French, German, Chinese and Japanese in order to improve second language acquisition. Each team of four students was asked to include a native speaker of their target language in order to foster engagementwith the language in a natural environment.

Over 45 films were produced with 19 being shown yesterday. Thanks to QuID,we were able to present four ipod touches to the team involved in making the best film: La Course. Vouchers were also presented to the best actress,Deidre Dolan, and to the best actor, Shane Friel.

The creativity and humour of DCU students was outstanding.
