DCU Library

Users with a Disability

DCU Library is committed to the provision of high quality library services and facilities for all users. We work closely with the DCU Disability and Learning Support Service to maximise the accessibility of our resources and facilities to users with a disability.

Access to Glasnevin Library

Access to the building itself is through revolving doors. For those who cannot or prefer not to use revolving doors, there is a door beside the revolving door operated by swipe card. Entrance to the library is through turnstiles which are electronically operated, again by means of swipe card. A wide gate has been provided to facilitate wheelchair users.

The café and student toilet areas are on the lower ground floor. A lift, located beside the Issue Desk, provides access to the lower ground floor. A lift at the back of the library, to the right of the Mentoring Suite, provides access to the upper floors. The lifts are operated by swipe cards.

Your student card automatically allows you access through the turnstiles. You will need to have your card specially configured, either through the Disability Service or by giving your details to staff at the Information Desk on the ground floor, to use the lifts and swipe-operated gates and doors. If you ever need to get a replacement student card, you will need to have it configured by going through the same procedures again.

If you wish, a member of library staff will take you around the building and answer any questions. Please ask at the Information Desk on the ground floor.

What additional services and facilities can I expect?

  • Low level Catalogue PCs are available on each floor.
  • Adjustable tables for study and PC use are available on all floors, and in the Training Room.
  • Staff at the Information Desk on the ground floor will retrieve items from the shelves on request. It may not always be possible to do this immediately and if you can, please contact us in advance.
  • Please contact us if you require flexible loan arrangements.

Access to St. Patrick's Library

Access to the building is through the two main revolving doors. There is an accessible door to the right (if you are entering, and to the left if you are exiting the building) of the revolving doors, this is operated by a push button. Entrance to the library is through electronic gates by means of a swipe card. A wide gate has been provided to facilitate wheelchair users. There are three accessible lifts, one external and two internal. The external lift is to the left of the main library steps leading to the main entrance of the library building. Facing the Drumcondra Road there is a push button, this door also allows wheelchair access for the Seamus Heaney Theatre. The second accessible lift is also on this level. The third lift is accessible within the electronic gate system and give access to all floors.

There are wheelchair accessible toilets on each floor, these are to the left of the lift (on exiting the lift, to the right of the lift if entering). In order to access the ground floor toilet users must swipe out of the electronic gates.
