Student Residence Network Connectivity

Information Systems & Services provide internet connectivity for students staying in Larkfield, Hampstead and College Park Apartments, All Hollows and St Patricks campus residences.

Campus Residences - General Computing Regulations

The attention of occupants is drawn to the following legislation and regulations, which apply to all DCU-related computing activity:

1. The Code of Conduct for the Use of Computing Resources, DCU.
2. The HEAnet Acceptable Usage Policy (AUP)
3. Data Related Policies and Guidelines
4. The Criminal Damage Act, 1991.
5. The Child Trafficking and Pornography Act, 1998.

Campus Residences - Copyright Regulation

Occupants and/or their guests are expressly forbidden from engaging in any activity, which infringes copyright.

Infringements include (but are not limited to) the following:-

• • Copying physical media e.g. CD, DVD, video & audio tapes in breach of copyright
  • Downloading and storing material (either electronically or otherwise) in breach of copyright
  • Publishing or transmitting material or making it available to others by any sharing/publishing mechanism - electronic or otherwise - in breach of copyright

The attention of occupiers' is drawn to the various Irish and international copyright legislation and regulations.

Breach of the above will be considered as "gross misconduct" and may lead to disciplinary action being taken. 

The minimum sanction of a one-month disconnection may be imposed for a first offence and does not preclude other action from been taken.

Campus Residences - Networking Regulation

Occupants and/or their guests are not permitted to:

• • Build or operate data, voice or other networks / communications links other than Wi-Fi devices for personal use.
  • Run servers (or services on workstations/devices) which interfere in any way with campus systems in the vicinity of [i] the campus(es) [ii] the residences buildings without the express permission of Information Systems Services, DCU.

The prohibited servers (or services on workstations/devices) include (but are not limited to) the following: -

• • Mail servers
  • Open-mail-relays
  • Routing services
  • DHCP or BOOTP servers
  • Proxy servers

File-sharing, streaming, broadcasting or any form of electronic publishing directly from workstation(s) or other technologies owned by or operated by occupants in the residences is expressly forbidden where it infringes on copyright.

It is expressly forbidden for any device connected to the campus network also to be connected to any other wired or wireless network with the exception of a Wi-Fi router for personal use.

It is forbidden to assign static DCU IP addresses to computers and Wi-Fi devices.

The attention of occupiers is drawn to the various wireless, telegraphy and communications legislation enacted by EU, Oireachtas Eireann and to regulations issued from time-to-time by the Commission for Communications Regulation.

It is your responsibility to ensure you read, understand and fully comply with these regulations. It is a condition of the use of the university IT resources generally that you abide by these.

By signing up for residences internet access you accept the limitations imposed in terms of ensuring the reputation of the university is protected and that resources are secured.

Information Systems Services reserves the right to use utilities and methods to secure the integrity and reputation of the University and its IT resources.

ISS may issue amended regulations if it is deemed to be in the best interests of the University.
