Archive of the Month

Since January 2012, the RCB (Representative Church Body) Library which is the main repository for the archives of the Church of Ireland, has published an 'Archive of the Month' online aimed at showcasing specific collections or manuscripts in the library's custody to a worldwide audience.

In collaboration with the RCB Library, Jonathan Cherry, a lecturer in Geography in the School of History and Geography DCU, has compiled an introduction to the recently digitised vestry book ok Killoughter parish in the diocese of Kilmore as the November Archive of the Month.  Vestry books provide an important record of how parishes were organised and managed and by whom and are significant sources for historical geographers, historians and genealogists interested in the socio-economic development of the area.

In a press release from the RCB Dr Susan Hood, Librarian and Archivist, said 'Dr Cherry's work is invaluable not only for the local information and human interest stories it has brought to life, but also for revealing the wider significance of Church of Ireland vestry records which deserve greater historical attention.'
